Our programme has been established by Te Ora Hou Otautahi and the Blue Light Canterbury Youth Development Programme to support disengaged young people to develop employment skills and to transition into full-time employment or training.
We commenced as Mahi Tahi in March 2011 and expected to be around six participants and one supervisor. With strong demand for placements, and a post-earthquake surge in demand for workers, we rapidly grew to be twenty young people, an operations manager, several supervisors, two trucks, a van, and a ute. More recently the programme has gained a full-time manager, and also a case manager to work with our participants.
Taua Mahi is a training programme with a supportive, developmental focus. The majority of the time young people are in our programme is spent in paid, supported employment, working as part of a Taua Mahi-supervised team. We also offer vocational training and we work to address broader issues impacting on work readiness.
