Taua Mahi embraces Circle of Courage model of positive youth development

Taua Mahi was this week represented at training on Circle of Courage, a model of youth empowerment with four core values: belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity. This model is supported by research while incorporating native North American philosophies of child care. The training was presented by Dr Martin Brokenleg, who is part of the group that developed the model. Dr Brokenleg is a professor of psychology and a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe of the Lakota people. Over the two days the training covered topics including the background & details of the model, colonialism, biculturalism, and youth-positive cultures and environments. A modified version of the Circle of Courage has been adopted as by Taua Mahi’s parent organisation Te Ora Hou. Taua Mahi work profiled by SCIRT

Taua Mahi’s work placements often involve involve earthquake response and recovery. Over the past two months we have been doing a lot of ‘potholing’. This involves hand digging of holes and trenches to either locate services (when they need to be found), or to confirm the absence of services (prior to excavations or geotechnical drilling). The Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT) has profiled one of our projects on their website – read the SCIRT article here.

Academy registrar gave ‘big break’ to Taua Mahi operations manager

The Christchurch training sector is mourning the recent passing of Nicolas Murray, registrar at the Christchurch campus of Academy New Zealand.

Taua Mahi operations manager Jason Griffiths credits Nick with giving him his ‘big break’, as Jason moved from trades work into youth development. Jason spent 2010 as construction tutor at the Christchurch Academy, taking up an opportunity to pass on work ethics and trade skills to young people. Jason is grateful for Nick’s non-judgmental approach and for supporting and enabling Jason to follow his dream.

Jason remembers Nick as a firm but calm man, who was respected by staff and students alike.

Nick inspired Jason to carry on into youth work, and during his time at the academy Jason worked with youth and staff from the Canterbury Youth Development Programme, leading to his current role with Taua Mahi.

New equipment adds capability for Taua Mahi

The Taua Mahi programme has a 1.5 ton tracked excavator available. This can be provided as part of a contracted service (for example, along with a tipper truck, licensed operator and work crew), or alternatively hire of the excavator only can be arranged. A point of difference is the fully-enclosed cab, enabling all-weather operation.

New name: Taua Mahi youth employment transition programme

After initially operating under the working title Mahi Tahi, our programme has launched our new name: Taua Mahi. This phrase means a coordinated approach or a coordinated unit/party – the context is that that group that works together gets the job done quicker.

With this new name comes our new website, and contact details.

Taua Mahi’s manager Simon Britten is one of seven recipients of the Vodafone New Zealand Foundation World of Difference programme for 2012.
